Michigan state Rep. Joe Aragona (R) is working on legislation that would allow hemp-derived THC beverages to be sold at bars, liquor stores, and grocery stores. Rep. Aragona told the Detroit News that the drinks are “becoming another option that people go to when they want to relax, have a drink or socialize.” The bill would likely include a new tax on sales of the beverages.
Robin Schneider, executive director for the Michigan Cannabis Industry Association, told the Detroit News the products could raise about $50 million annually in in-state sales alone – and even more if the products are allowed to be sold out-of-state. MiCIA continues to promote new revenue streams for road funding rather than tax increases.
